Growing Readers

“Growing readers “ is about inspiring your child to love books and enrich his/her desire to be a reader as well as a story creator.

Fun activities support you in helping your child to grow into a confident reader and obtain the love of books as well as the passion for reading. Research shows that the earlier children have enjoyable experiences with books and reading, the earlier the language skills blossom.

Tip for Growing Confident Readers Using the PEER Framework.

The helpful PEER  framework is very effective.

When reading together, pause and:

P – rompt your child to say something about the book

E – valuate your child response

E – xpand your child’s response by rephrasing or adding information to it ; and

R – epeat the prompt to help your child learn from the expansion.

For Example, If you and your child were looking at a page in a book, you might point at a picture and say  “What is that?” (prompt) . Your child replies, “fish” , and you could respond, “That’s right (evaluation ) – it’s a Big spotty fish ( the expansion ) : can you say, spotty fish”? (the repetition)

Holiday Writers

The holidays are also a perfect opportunity to inspire writing for a purpose. For example, on your summer holiday, choose some postcards together and decide who to write and send a postcard too. When you get back home, check in with family and friends to see if the postcard arrived.

Book Diary

Create a diary of the books you read together as you read them over the year. Discuss which were the family favourite books and why. Rank them in order of most favourite books.
